SUMMARY:Extreme Reactions: Working with Clients who Self-Injure
DESCRIPTION:Working with self-injury can evoke strong emotional responses in both clients and counsellors. Many practitioners report feeling anxious\, uncertain\, or overly cautious when self-harm is disclosed. Today’s training offers a compassionate\, evidence-informed approach to understanding and responding to self-injury within counselling relationships. \nRather than focusing on risk prediction or procedures alone\, the course explores self-injury as a meaningful response to overwhelming internal or relational experiences. Participants will develop greater confidence in assessment and therapeutic responses that reduce shame\, strengthen the working alliance\, and support client safety. \nDrawing on current UK guidance and emerging research\, the training combines short teaching inputs with reflective discussion and breakout room work. It is suitable for counsellors\, psychotherapists\, trainees\, and supervisors working with adults or young people. \nParticipants will:\n• Develop a deeper understanding of the functions and meanings of self-injury\n• Learn how to respond to disclosures in ways that reduce shame and escalation\n• Explore collaborative\, person-centred approaches to assessment and safety\n• Reflect on therapist reactions\, boundaries\, and supervision needs\n• Gain practical language and tools for use in both face-to-face and online counselling \nCome for yourself. Come for your clients. \nPauline says: “When a client discloses self-injury\, it can feel alarming\, confusing\, or even frightening for us as counsellors\, especially when we care deeply about client safety and our professional responsibilities. We will look at self-injury as an extreme reaction to stress\, rather than a behaviour to be controlled or eliminated. The morning will also include honest testimony from experts-by-experience.”

SUMMARY:5 Ways of Working with Transactional Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Transactional Analysis (TA) is a practical model for understanding how people relate to themselves and others\, and why certain patterns can feel so hard to shift. It helps us notice what’s happening in communication\, how early experiences shape beliefs and “scripts\,” and how we can support clients to respond with more choice\, self-compassion\, and relational confidence. \nIn this online training day you’ll experience both the foundational and some less familiar TA concepts in action\, through simple\, practical interventions you can take straight into your counselling work. We’ll explore: \n\nScripts and Injunctions\nDrivers and Strokes\nPermissions\, Protection and Potency\nLoneliness\, Avoidance and Relational Patterns\nTA Traps (and how to avoid them)\n\nCreative\, experiential exercises will underpin the day\, and Buddy Groups in breakout rooms will give you plenty of opportunity to reflect on what you notice\, share your learning\, and practise with one another in a supportive environment. \nThis is not just theory — it’s about developing a clear\, accessible language you can use in the therapy room\, alongside a set of relational tools that help you work more effectively with stuckness\, shame\, relational loops\, and the pull to over-function or rescue. \nCome for yourself… come for your client. \nPauline says:\n“I love the way TA enables both counsellor and client to have an accessible language for understanding why some relationships feel difficult.  These patterns were often learned early in life for good reasons\, and TA brings clarity without blame\, and offers practical ways to move towards greater self-awareness\, choice\, and change.” \n

SUMMARY:5 Ways of Working with Gestalt
DESCRIPTION:Gestalt is an experiential\, embodied\, here-and-now way of working that can profoundly shape and deepen the client–counsellor relationship. In this training\, you’ll experience Gestalt principles in action through simple\, practical interventions you can bring straight into your practice\, including: \n\nMicro-processing awareness\nMapping the boundaries of your world\nThe dialogic encounter\nUnfinished business\nWorking with polarities\n\nCreative\, experiential exercises will underpin the day\, and Buddy Groups in breakout rooms will give you plenty of opportunity to explore what you noticed\, share your experience\, and practise with one another in a supportive environment. \nThis is not just theory. Gestalt can change the way you see life — bringing new recognition of what you’ve been carrying emotionally and in your body\, and supporting the release of patterns that may be holding you back. \nCome for yourself… come for your client. \nPauline says:\n“Gestalt Theory transformed the way I work with clients\, deepening our relationship and bringing revelation and understanding to us both. It is a mutual way of working — gently ‘building the road as we travel’ — and learning together from each other.”

SUMMARY:When Fathers Wound
DESCRIPTION:Today’s training will equip you to more deeply recognise and understand the effects of ruptures in the father-child relationship. We will deepen our understanding of clients who have experienced a ‘difficult father\,’ and for the many who relate to this struggle\, we hope you will feel validated and encouraged too. Come for yourself\, come for your clients. \nKey areas will include: \n\nPersonal Experiences: the eye-opening results of our survey on how counsellors have been affected in childhood\, adolescence\, and adulthood by their fathers\, as well as the generous video testimonies of those who share their own experiences.\nSpecific Effects: Understanding the specific mental health and relational challenges stemming from these wounds\, including the impact of absent fathers and domestic abuse.\nSecure Attachment and Belonging: Exploring the concepts of secure attachment and the circle of belonging and how these are impacted by fathers.\nReenactments: Identifying and addressing how father wounds might be replayed in adult attachment behaviours\, as well as how these wounds show up in life scripts and behavioural drivers.\nSecondary Narcissism: Understanding secondary narcissism\, its manifestations and its relevance for some fathers.\nCounselling Insights: the therapist attitudes and interventions that have been reported as helpful in this area – as well as pitfalls for counsellors to avoid.

SUMMARY:When Mothers Wound
DESCRIPTION:Why is it often so hard to heal from wounds inflicted by a mother who did not meet our needs and how do we come to terms with lack of maternal love in the way we needed it? \nToday we will explore different kinds of difficult mothering\, considering how this can shape our self concept\, and the maternal transference that often is present in the counselling room. \nJoin us as we explore: \n\nWhat we need for a sense of safety and emotional regulation\, originating in our infant experience\nHow ‘difficult’ mothering causes a relational dilemma\nFive types of problematic mothering\, including controlling and emotionally unavailable mothers\nHow we may feel very obviously affected by a mother wound\, but how its effects can also be subtle – and why this is just as important\nConsiderations for client work\, including how a client’s experiences in this area might surface in our work together\n\nWe will also hear some raw and powerful testimonies from people who have struggled with their mothers for different reasons\, and how they have come to find a way forward.

SUMMARY:The Scapegoat & the Golden Child: Healing the Wounds of Family Blame & Favouritism with Katy Bodman
DESCRIPTION:Today we will together explore the complex family dynamics of the scapegoat and the golden child through a person-centred therapeutic lens—one rooted in empathy\, unconditional positive regard\, and a deep belief in each individual’s innate capacity for growth and healing. \nIn families impacted by narcissistic traits\, these roles are often unconsciously assigned to meet the emotional needs of the system\, rather than the individual. While the golden child may be idealised and burdened with unrealistic expectations\, the scapegoat is often blamed\, pathologised\, and emotionally exiled. Both roles carry profound and distinct forms of pain. This course invites us to compassionately explore how these dynamics shape not only a client’s self-concept\, but also their sense of worth\, autonomy\, and ability to connect in relationships. \nWe will consider why these patterns are so compelling and enduring in narcissistic family systems\, how they obscure genuine connection in favour of control and image\, and how we can provide the conditions that support clients to reconnect with their true selves and move beyond these roles and into a fuller\, more authentic life.
